Our Young Women’s Health & Leadership Programs are an opportunity for youth to explore areas of personal and career interest, to formulate future plans which for some will be pathways into the health professions, and to acquire leadership skills for use throughout their lives.

Over the years we have hired over 300 interns to create the annual Young Women’s Health and Leadership Summit and various other projects pertaining to young women’s health in schools and in the community. Through the program, interns gain hands-on work experience in women’s health. We aim to make the internship a meaningful experience for the interns and their supervisors participating in the program.

The primary long-term goals of the Internship Program are to:

  • cultivate, prepare and educate the next generation of women’s health leaders
  • empower interns with knowledge of future career options and opportunities
  • provide individuals with the tools for strong communication, leadership and professional employment skills
  • develop a network of mentors and role models for young women
  • develop working partnerships with academic institutions, other educational organizations, and community groups that represent the diversity of the Bay Area

Interns come to the UCSF CoE from a wide range of communities, schools, and organizations- primarily from the Bay Area but also beyond- many of which have on-going partnerships with the CoE. Our program is committed to serving diverse groups of women and girls.

Our Programs

The Youth Steering Committee (YSC) is a 9 month leadership program for young women from the San Francisco Unified School District. We recognize the many strengths and assets of young women and provide education, tools and experience to them so they develop as effective leaders among their peers, within their schools, and throughout their community.

The Innovators in Young Women’s Health Program is a health and leadership training opportunity. Now in its sixth year, the Innovators Program is designed to be a place where diverse young women can share their thoughts and ideas, develop self-confidence, build leadership skills and create programs and social media content to empower their peers.
