Fishbon Endowed Chair in Family Planning and Abortion at UCSF Mount Zion
Congratulations to Katie Brown for being selected as the inaugural holder of the Fishbon Endowed Chair in Family Planning and Abortion as established by Nancy Milliken & Rebecca Jackson. Dr. Brown was selected on the basis of her proposal to develop innovative clinical, training and/or research programs that address currently relevant needs in the area of family planning and abortion.
Dr. Emilia Basilio was awarded a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Diversity Supplement

Dr. Emilia Basilio was awarded a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Diversity Supplement to Dr. Joshua Robinson’s R01 parent grant entitled, “Delineating mechanisms underlying azole-induced developmental toxicity using single cell transcriptomic approaches, genome editing tools, and alternative models”.
This Diversity Supplement will provide support for Dr. Basilio's examination of the effects of wildfire smoke exposure on pregnancy in future investigations.

Dr. Marya Zlatnik is the recipient of an Excellence in Teaching Award from the Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators.

Dr. Zlatnik has been an exceptional educator for medical students, residents and maternal-fetal medicine fellows for the past 23 years. She teaches in the PISCES program, the continuity outpatient clinics, in the prenatal diagnosis center, and on the antepartum service. She not only inspires our learners with her direct teaching, but she is also a climate change activist and fierce advocate for health equity in reproductive health. Congratulations Dr. Zlatnik!

Diana Greene Foster was recognized by Forbes for the Turnaway Study, a nationwide longitudinal study on the well-being of women who have or are denied an abortion. Currently, she is collaborating with scientists on a Nepal Turnaway Study.

2023 John A. Watson Faculty Scholar: Waru Gichane, PhD, MSPH
The Dean’s Diversity Fund Committee selected Dr. Waru Gichane as a recipient of a grant and namedher a John A. Watson Faculty Scholar in honor of John A. Watson, PhD. The funds will support Dr. Gichane‘s long- term career development goals and support her work at UCSF as faculty member.
Margaret (Waru) Gichane, is an Assistant Professor and social and behavioral scientist at ANSIRH. Her research is dedicated to identifying and addressing the structural and social factors that produce disparities in sexual and reproductive health outcomes in the United States and Sub-Saharan Africa
Dr. Carrie Crook is this year’s winner of the ZSFG Julius R. Krevans Award for Clinical Excellence.

Dr. Carrie Crook is this year’s winner of the ZSFG Julius R. Krevans Award for Clinical Excellence. The Krevans Award is given annually to one intern from each clinical service at ZSFG in recognition of outstanding clinical skills and dedication to serving marginalized and underserved patients.
Dr. Crook was drawn to the field of OBGYN through experiences that demonstrated how quality reproductive health care is a pivotal social justice issue within medicine. Throughout medical school, she was inspired by stories of the “granny midwives,” caring for Black women in rural Alabama such as her own great-grandmother. Her mission has been to work for and empower those who continue to be excluded from opportunity and wellbeing.

Domiciled in the Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators (AME), this endowed chair is reserved exclusively for Academy members and held for a term of 5 years.
Dr. Mary Norton: Appointed Director of the MFM Perinatal Research Program
Dr. Norton will oversee the Research Recruitment Program, foster a community of research faculty and staff, facilitate investigators’ ability to secure funding, promote early investigators’ career development, as well as diversity and inclusion.
Dr. Norton will foster all research efforts within MFM including clinical, social science, and basic science research as well as collaborations with outside divisions.

Two UCSF School of Pharmacy faculty members, Tanja Kortemme, PhD, and Tejal Desai, PhD, were elected into prestigious roles at the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) this month. Kortemme was inducted into the AIMBE College of Fellows, and Desai, who is both a current fellow and the chair of the College of Fellows, was named the president-elect of the AIMBE.
