We are thrilled to announce that Nerys Benfield, MD, MPH has accepted the position as UCSF Chief Medical Officer for Women’s Health and Vice Chair for Quality and Safety in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences.
She and her family will be relocating from the East Coast for a May 1, 2022 start date at UCSF.
Dr. Benfield is no stranger to our Department or the region. She obtained her medical degree and completed her residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology and Fellowship in Family Planning right here at UCSF. Additionally, she received her master’s degree in Public Health from UC Berkeley.
Most recently, Dr. Benfield was Associate Professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine / Montefiore Medical Center in New York. She also served as Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion; was Director of Family Planning and the Fellowship in Family Planning within the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s Health; and directed the Global Women’s Health and Social Obstetrics and Gynecology Program.
She currently serves on the board of ACOG and the Society of Family Planning where she co-chairs their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.
In her personal time, Dr. Benfield enjoys playing and making art with her 3-year-old son, reading mystery novels, and traveling – particularly to visit far-flung family across the Caribbean, England, and Israel.
